Während der Westen der Stadt im Jahr 1887 das goldene Thronjubiläum Queen Victorias feiert, eskaliert im East End die soziale Not. Die Armen strömen ins Zentrum und der Trafalgar Square wird zum Brennpunkt – am „Bloody Sunday“ bricht die Gewalt schließlich offen aus. Zeitgleich steht die junge Metropolitan Police unter massivem Druck, und die aufkommende Sensationspresse heizt die Lage weiter an.

In dieser Folge blicken wir auf zwei zentrale Institutionen – die Polizei und die Presse – und zeigen, wie gesellschaftliche Spannungen, politische Machtkämpfe und mediale Inszenierungen den Boden für den "Herbst des Schreckens" bereiteten.
